Wear Green for Free Guac at Chipotle

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

It’s no secret that on St. Paddy’s Day there will be plenty of drinking. But before you raise that first pint or shot, be sure to line your tummy with something yummy.

The best pre-Paddy’s party food has to be high in calories and, frankly, fat.

Take a burrito from Chipotle, for example:

Flour tortilla (290 cal, 9g fat)
+  Rice (130 cal)
+  Beans (120 cal)
+  Corn salsa (80 cal)
+  Meat (190 cal, ~7.5g fat)
+  Guacamole (150 cal, 13g fat)
You tipplin’ without tippin’ over

More nutrition info is here. For your pre-party, order Chipotle’s Burritos by the Box (box of 6 burritos of your choice) at www.chipotle.com, wear green when you pick them up, and get free shots of guac all day St. Paddy’s Day, March 17 (WA & OR).

Pay 1950s Prices at Canlis?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Dec. 11 is the 59th anniversary of Canlis Restaurant. In celebration, one couple each night from Dec. 9-11 will receive the opportunity to pay 1950s prices for their meal. The couple’s names will be drawn during pre-shift from that evening’s reservations. Mark or Brian Canlis will then present that couple a classic menu from the 1950s when lamb chops cost $3.50, filet mignon cost $4.25 and fresh Dungeness crab legs cost a mere $1.50.

On the evening of Dec. 11, each guest will receive a mini cupcake in honor of the anniversary.

A CALL TO JOIN THE CAN-VOLUTION: Aug 29 & 30

Friday, July 31st, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEATTLE, WA (July 31, 2009) — We could blame it on the economy, or or a growing desire to know where our food comes from.  But instead, we’ll blame the birth of Canning Across America (CAA) all on Twitter.

Inspired by Yes, We Can, a community home canning project in the Bay Area, food writer Kim O’Donnel asked out loud on Twitter: What if Seattle got in on the canning act? Better still, what if we led the charge and set a date for a city-wide can-a-thon and encourage other cities around the country to follow suit for  simultaneous coast-to-coast canning ‘stravaganzas?

And so a Can-volution was born.

Canning Across America is a nationwide, ad hoc collective of cooks, gardeners and food lovers committed to the revival of the lost art of  “putting up” food. Our goal is to teach each other the science behind safe food preservation and the joys of community building through food. We believe in celebrating the bounty of local and seasonal produce and taking greater control of our food supply. In a recent reader survey conducted by Allrecipes.com, more than 38 percent of those surveyed said they plan to can, freeze or preserve fresh food this summer; among those with canning plans, 83 percent said: “It’s worth a little extra time to make my own foods to control the ingredients my family eats.”

Online, we’re cooking up blog dispatches from around the country, a Flickr feed of canning photos as well as recipes from cookbook writers, including John Besh and Tessa Kiros. You can find us at http://www.cansacrossamerica.wordpress.com.
And of course, we’ve got a Twitter feed: twitter.com/canvolution

Mark your calendars for the weekend of Aug. 29-30, CAA’s kickoff series of events, which promises to include demos and classes open to the public as well as community-based gatherings.

Join the can-volution!
